Sea Captains’ Houses On High Street
Newburyport was laid out on the high south bank of the Merrimack. Colonial residences climb the bank from Merrimac Street to High Street, near the top of the ridge. The homes of the city’s seafaring merchants line High Street, and many have widow’s walks on the roof. High Street also features old Federal-style houses.
