From Rowley’s West Parish To Its Own Town
Georgetown began as the western half of Rowley, settled in 1639. Farmers found good meadowland along Penn Brook and formed Rowley’s West Parish there. The village, known as New Rowley, grew for many years with small mills and later a shoe company. In 1838 it was large enough to incorporate, and it took the name Georgetown.
Today the town is mostly residential. It sits on the edge of the hills and coastal plain, crossed by streams and brooks. Interstate 95 crosses the eastern half of town, and Routes 133 and 97 share a short stretch near the center. Protected land lies on several sides. The Georgetown-Rowley State Forest is to the south and the Crane Pond Wildlife Management Area to the north. The Lufkins Brook Area sits to the west.
