Saugus is home to the first integrated iron works in North America. It began in 1646 as Hammersmith, and the rebuilt works is now the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site. A Town Of Villages
Saugus was incorporated in 1815, when farming was its main industry. The Industrial Revolution changed that. Shoes and woolen goods were made in Saugus Center, and tobacco in Cliftondale and East Saugus. From 1853 to 1958, the Saugus Branch Railroad stopped at Saugus Center, Cliftondale and Pleasant Hills. Cliftondale Square is still home to George’s Barber Shop, opened in 1898 and the oldest barber shop in the United States.
Route 1 tells a later story. Built in 1805 as the Newburyport Turnpike, it grew busy with cars and, from the 1950s, with businesses. In North Saugus, Breakheart Reservation has been open to the public since 1936. In 2001, federal funds paid to dredge the Saugus River.
All of that adds up to homes of many ages. Some owners want windows that look right on an older house. Others mainly want to cut drafts and stop fighting stuck sash. How to choose among them? The Classic suits most houses. The Slimline starts lowest, and the Series 3000 adds a foam-insulated frame. If winter comfort is the goal, the triple-pane Series 9000 has the lowest U-value of the four. For a basement or a wider opening, ask about basement hopper windows and sliding windows.
