Granite, Fishing And Summer Homes
Richard Tarr, a granite cutter and the first settler of the Sandy Bay Colony, lived in what is now Rockport in 1680. By the 1830s, Rockport granite was being shipped to cities and towns all along the East Coast. Finnish and Swedish stone workers made up a large part of the quarry crews.
For a long time Rockport was mostly large estates, summer homes and a small fishing village. It became an artists’ colony, known for its rocky, boulder-strewn beaches and its fishing harbor. The town was incorporated in 1840.
Rockport even has a War of 1812 story. In 1814, a British barge fired at the Congregational Church bell, and the cannonball lodged in the steeple. A replica can still be seen there today.

From Bearskin Neck to Halibut Point, the ocean is never far away. In a town surrounded on three sides by water, windows need to stand up to the wind. Triple-pane glass is the place to start.
The shore is mostly rocky north of Lands End, and three of the town’s six beaches lie on the stretch south of it. Straitsmouth, Thacher and Milk Islands are all part of the town. Route 127 follows the sea from Back Harbor to Halibut Point.
