A Shipbuilding Town On The Great Marsh
Essex was part of Ipswich, then called Chebacco Parish, until it became its own town in 1819. It is known as a former center of shipbuilding, and the Essex Shipbuilding Museum keeps that story alive. Older landmarks still stand, such as Cogswell’s Grant from about 1728. The First Congregational Church on Main Street has a meetinghouse built in 1792, with a Paul Revere bell in the belfry.
Most of the town sits close to sea level, with marsh, creeks and only a few low hills. Open marsh gives little shelter from the wind. In a house near the river, out toward Conomo Point or along Chebacco Lake, worn sash can let that wind in. Cold glass and drafty sills are common complaints in any older home, and new windows answer both. Damp ground near water is also hard on old wood sash, which can swell, stick or rot over time. Essex has also kept a rural quality, with forest, wetland and open space.
