Replacement Windows In Ipswich
Ipswich is known for its early architecture. In the 19th century, the great clipper ships passed the town by. Many residents kept living in their older homes rather than replacing them. Our shop in Seabrook is about 33 minutes and 20.4 miles away. The Window Source NH, a family-owned company, replaces windows and doors here with our own local crew.
Early Houses, Mill History And The Coast
Ipswich was incorporated in 1634, and some of its buildings are very old. The John Whipple House dates to 1642 and 1677, and the Choate Bridge to 1764. The town later became a mill town after a stocking machine arrived in 1822. The Ipswich Hosiery Mills, founded beside the river in 1868, became the nation’s largest stocking mill by the turn of the 20th century. Today the Brown Stocking Mill Historic District recalls that era.
Then there is the water. The Ipswich River and Plum Island Sound meet near Castle Hill. The town also takes in Crane Beach and the southern part of Plum Island. The northeast corner of town is salt marsh. Inland, Willowdale State Forest covers much of the western end, and Appleton Farms dates to 1638. A house near the shore faces salt air and coastal wind, and a house farther inland may simply be very old. Either way, worn windows are a common place for heat to escape.
Older openings are rarely perfectly square, which is one reason we measure every window in person. If your house sits in a historic district, your town’s building department can tell you what approvals apply.
Choosing Windows For An Ipswich House
Prices below are installed, for a white double hung with basic installation; grids and colors add.
- Harvey Tribute, from $683: contoured, beveled sash and hidden tilt latches give it a traditional look. It has a .25 U-value.
- Harvey Homerun, from $699: our best value and the most efficient window we sell, with triple-pane glass and a .18 U-value.
- Harvey Slimline, from $545: a slim welded frame shows more glass, which suits a view of the marsh or the Sound. It has a .29 U-value.
- Harvey Classic, from $617: our best seller, with fusion-welded frames, double-strength glass and a .24 U-value.
For an early house, colonial grids restore the look of divided panes. Harvey Windows + Doors is a New England manufacturer based in Waltham, Massachusetts. You can learn more about Harvey windows in Massachusetts or browse every double hung we install.
Not every opening in an old house is a standard double hung. We also install casement and awning windows, bay and bow windows and architectural and shaped windows. Bring up any odd sizes or shapes at the measure, and we will price them in your written quote.
