Replacement Windows In Peabody
Peabody, still known locally as the Leather City, is about 40 minutes and 29.1 miles from our shop in Seabrook. We are The Window Source NH, a family-owned replacement window and door company. Our own local crew measures, orders and installs every window, whether your home is in West Peabody, South Peabody or near Peabody Square.
From Salem Farms To The Leather City
Peabody was settled as part of Salem in 1626. Over the years the area was called the Northfields, Salem Farms and Brooksby. It split from Danvers in 1855 as South Danvers and became Peabody in 1868, named for the philanthropist George Peabody.
Water-powered mills came early, and the Central Street corridor made redware pottery in the 18th century. Peabody then became a major center of New England’s leather industry. Its tanneries stayed at the heart of the economy into the second half of the 20th century.
Older Neighborhoods And Newer Ones
That long run left Peabody with very different settings. The Washington Street Historic District is a 19th-century neighborhood where many civic and business leaders built homes. West Peabody, by contrast, was mostly farm land until the 1950s and has since grown into a residential area. The Northshore Shopping Center opened in 1958 on farm land once owned by Elias Hasket Derby.
Those two settings often call for different windows. A 19th-century house tends to look right with a traditional sash and grids that suit its age. A home built after the 1950s may simply need tighter, more efficient windows that are easy to clean. Either way, we measure every opening before anything is ordered.
Peabody’s rivers shape parts of the city too. The Ipswich River runs along the northwestern border, and the Waters River drains the northeastern part of town. If your house sits near the water or out in the open toward Brooksby Farm, look closely at how well your windows seal.
